The Christian church in Africa is growing. However, many Africans practice spiritism alongside their Christian faith. Since the Bible’s teaching is clear, why is this such a common issue?
- They believe Christianity alone does not have answers to everyday problems.
- They keep in touch with the spirits to gain health, wealth, prosperity, and to keep their jobs and businesses secure.
- They practice spiritism to maintain contact with their community and traditional structure.
This practice of combining the spiritism of African traditional religion with Christianity is undermining the health of the church in Africa.
Real Power: Jesus Christ's Authority Over the Spirits lays a foundation for genuine change. Rev Moses Matonya provides an insightful overview of Africa’s traditional religions to help the African church understand their power and hold on people. He walks through the book of Colossians to show how Paul dealt with issues similar to the ones our churches face today.
The problem of spiritism may seem insurmountable. But nothing is impossible for Jesus – the only one with real power.
Rev Can Moses Matonya serves as the General Secretary of Christian Council of Tanzania (CCT). He previously served as Assistant Lecturer in the School of Theology and Religious Studies at St John's University of Tanzania, as Principal of Msalato Theological College, as Dean of Cathedral of the Holy Spirit in the Anglican Diocese of Central Tanganyika, and as the Principal of Kondoa Bible School.
He holds a BA in Theology from Trinity College in Bristol, UK, an MA in Contemporary Mission Studies from All Nations Christian College in Hertfordshire, UK, and is currently pursuing PhD studies at Liverpool Hope University in Liverpool, UK. He and his wife, Ruth, have five children.
