When Jesus encountered suffering and disease, what did he do? Did he look the other way? Or did he care for those around him with a loving heart?

Our churches have a choice to make. Will we look down on the people in our congregations who suffer from AIDS? Will we pretend like their disease does not exist? Or will we give people with AIDS our attention, care, and love?

In AIDS is Real and it's in our Church, Jean Garland and Dr Mike Blyth combine modern medical knowledge with timeless biblical wisdom to help us follow in the footsteps of Jesus as we respond to HIV and AIDS. The authors provide information about AIDS in Africa, tell us how to prevent HIV infection, and encourage us to have a godly response to the AIDS epidemic.

When you encounter AIDS in the church, this book will help you respond with grace, compassion, and wisdom.

Jean Garland is a health professional who has lived and worked in Nigeria since 1987. She has served various denominations, student groups, and government programmes by providing HIV/AIDS awareness, training, and care.

Dr Mike Blyth has been a consultant paediatrician at ECWA Evangel Hospital in Jos, Nigeria, where has served since 1991. He has also been a medical consultant for the Spring of Life (HIV/AIDS) Counseling Centre.

I have used AIDS Is Real as a text for teaching pastors, theology students and lay leaders in Ethiopia. This is the most thorough and balanced book I have seen on the subject. It addresses the epidemic from a holistic Christian perspective. I pray that this new edition will be widely read and be used by God to mobilize his church in defeating the scourge of HIV/AIDS. —Dr Tim Teusink, MD, SIM-Ethiopia, HIV/AIDS Prevention and Care, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

This is what the church needs to know about AIDS. AIDS Is Real is full of information, guidance, encouragement, and love. It is easy to read, with stimulating discussion questions. If this teaching were in every church, this understanding in every home, and this love in every heart, AIDS would be radically challenged and hope would be born anew. —Rev Dr Benjamin A. Kwashi, former Anglican Bishop of Jos
